What is a 3D Mammogram?
3D mammography uses advanced computer imaging to convert digital images of the breast into a stack of very thin layers or "slices," building a three-dimensional reconstruction of the breast that is much clearer to read. This is especially important for women with dense breast tissue.
During this process, data from the section of the breast we are most concerned about is displayed with exceptional clarity. Areas of masses and distortion become more evident and are no longer hidden by the overlapping tissue found above and below.
A helpful analogy for understanding 3D mammography is thinking of these retrieved images as the assembled pages in a book. If you look at a closed book, you can only see the cover rather than all of the pages in between — but when you open it up, you can flip through the entire book page by page to see everything in great detail.
What is a Genius 3D Mammography Exam?
Simply stated: it's a more accurate way to screen for breast cancer. Montclair Breast Center employs a Hologic Genius 3D Mammography machine. Hologic has been ranked #1 for six consecutive years in the mammography category of an annual independent survey of healthcare executives and clinicians.*
Genius exams deliver a series of detailed breast images, allowing your doctor to better evaluate your breasts layer by layer. Genius exams are FDA approved, and over 100 clinical studies have shown that by using this technology, doctors are able to screen for breast cancer with much greater accuracy–regardless of a woman’s age or breast density. The Genius 3D Mammography exam is proven to detect cancer 15 months earlier than traditional 2D screenings and detect 41% more invasive cancers than conventional mammography alone.
Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of being called back for additional screenings. And that’s Genius.
Why do I need a 3D Mammogram?
While many breast centers use analog mammograms (images printed on film), we combine the experience of fellowship trained breast imagers with the latest 3D digital mammography to better serve our patients’ needs. 3D mammography delivers an unimaginable clarity and certainty to our physicians. 3D mammography promises to decrease the number of our patients selected for biopsy, and most importantly — increase our ability to detect breast cancer at the earliest and most treatable stage.
How quickly will I receive results?
We provide same-day results and any additional testing required can be completed immediately.
Our imagers are fellowship trained, technology-driven experts who focus solely on breasts. Multiple studies prove that radiologists specializing in reading mammograms find smaller breast cancers.
