The size of a tumor of abnormal cells and whether or not those cells are contained to the place of origin determine the stage of cancer. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), indicating the cancer cell growth starts in the milk ducts. In Stage 0 breast cancer, the abnormal cells have not spread into the surrounding breast tissue.
Stage 0 breast cancer is a non-invasive cancer where atypical cells have been found in the lining of the breast milk duct. Furthermore, DCIS is highly treatable, but can spread into the surrounding breast tissue if left untreated or undetected.
